While we all love the symbol of the cross, it often needs to be "prettied up" to be palatable. Without flowers, precious metal or jewels, the cross itself calls us to change and transformation that can be unsettling. Jesus' disciples had trouble accepting the way of the cross no matter how many times Jesus proclaimed his message. They were the "stony ground" where the gospel message withered under the slightest stress. We're like that too, but Jesus has a way of dealing with thick heads and hard hearts.
