In John’s gospel, one of the most challenging things Jesus says is that we must “eat his flesh and drink his blood.” What does this mean? Is it cannibalism? Is it a ghoulish take on the gentle Jesus we all know and love? It is about incarnation – the way in which God is manifest in Jesus Christ in flesh and blood. It is also about how Jesus becomes more deeply incarnate in each of us as we allow him to be the life blood that flows through our veins.
