The rich get richer and the poor suffer; the society gets more violent each passing day; people worship God one day a week and have nothing to do with God the rest of the week. Such was the state of the nation of Israel when the prophet Amos was sent to tell them the truth; a truth they did not want to hear. Such is the state of our lives today. Do we expect God to allow children to go hungry while the wealthy benefit forever? Do we expect that God will tolerate the gun violence that has become common place forever? Amos promises that God’s justice will “roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.” May our violent, selfish ways be left in the wake of this river; may we be pulled down in the undertow of God’s transforming grace.
